Spray tanning

Does anyone know anything about spray tanning while pregnant? My doctor with averi told me it was safe but I have not asked my midwife this time around for her opinion (I go tomorrow and was planning on asking then!). I've been reading up on it online but I can not find any clear answers, some say all the chemicals are safe, others say the chemicals seep into your skin and can harm the baby! I am in a wedding Saturday and REALLY do not want to be the only pale one on top of being the only pregnant one! Just wondering if anyone else has an answer or an opinion... I wasn't going to do mystic tan I was planning on getting spray tanned at a salon so it would be even. Let me know what you think or if you have any links with more info!

I would say no to a mystic tan because i can hardly breathe when i get them done! but a spray tan by someone would prolly be just fine but i would ask your mid wife her opinion to be safe.

I would go with a "no" on that one because even though I don't know about chemicals seeping into your skin, it can get into your mucous membranes through your nose and lips, and therefore the chemicals would wind up in your body. And like other cosmetic products like hair dye, or food products like raw eggs, it may be ok for average Joe but pregnant women should keep the baby's safety in mind and just skip these things altogether just in case. Unless you're going to get a couple bottles of tanning lotion and do it yourself, I'd definitely go as you are. For one, you're not as pale as you think you are, and for another, no one's going to care!

Here's an article about the possible dangers of spray tans:

Another which states that there may be up to 45 other chemicals in tanning spray, including arsenic and lead, and advising pregnant women to skip it:

It seems that most of the people in FAVOR of tanning while pregnant are the ones selling the product! Big shocker there. I have found more websites from physicians saying to avoid it than to go for it.

Thank you Jessi for the message, I will read the articles and talk to my midwife tomorrow... just so you know though dyeing your hair is totally safe while pregnant... thats according to both my doctor with av and midwife so when you are pregnant feel free to keep dyeing that hair sis!

I was worried about it but half the boxes say not to. It's nice to know that some actual medical professionals say it's ok!

Went to see my midwife this morning! Spray tanning is A-OK while pregnant, there is nothing toxic that you can inhale or that may seep in your skin so YAY I dont hafta be pale at the wedding!

I'm glad you get to spray tan. I was going to say - if nothing else, grab a bottle of baby oil and hit the pool :)

Even if a spray tan is safe I'd do some research on the place your going to get it done. It may be safe but it doesn't always look right. My friend got one done for our junior prom and she looked aweful! and then Kevin got one done for his senior prom and looked ORANGE! Just be careful where you go :-)

I got the mystic tan done quiet a few times while pregnant with Grace. I think they are all fine...
